[SOLVED] Automatic update cannot exchange a DLL due to access restrictions

0 votes

Windows 7, ORM Designer 2.3.1.855

Trying to use the new automatic update function to upgrade to 2.3.3, this screen came up:

"Zugriff verweigert" = "Access denied". Probably a problem with Windows 7 ACL and not running the update in Admin mode.

Access denied message on update

We have fixed this in the current betaversion (http://support.orm-designer.com/402/). Automatic update should now work without problems even when the user privileges are restricted.

However only way to check if it is working correctly on your side is to install this beta version and wait for the next public update.

Yup. I hope I remember this ticket when a new public version is available. ;)

Hello Joern, the 2.3.4 version was released for public, let me know if the automatic update works correctly now.

Perfect! UAC request came up, after I answered it positively, message "successfuly (sic!) installed". Now I am using 2.3.4.870! ;)

You could change the typo into "successfully", but that's just a minor detail.

Minor detail fixed by a minor change, we will ship it out with the next release. Many thanks for you and your keen eyes :)

This behavior is "kind of" expected, we did not want to bypass the access control at this moment. The updater window includes links for manual download for such cases - they didn't display in your case because of the size of the window, we will fix that.

We will check and discuss possibilities, how to deal with the permissions issue and let you know.

Can't you request admin privileges from Windows in this case? Like with the security shield in front of the "Update now" button?

Either way, it's confusing to first try the update to find out it fails. If you could check access privilieges beforehand and prevent automatic update altogether, that would already be a big improvement.
